125th Anniversary - July 2007
WM Tedd   The Lodge celebrated its 125th Anniversary on July 28, 2007 with an open house and program for the community. Master Tedd Hansen gave a summary of the Lodge's history, using the North wall as a timeline to portray where various events fell between the founding of the Lodge in 1882 and the present day. Tedd is nearing the mid-point of the wall that marked both the end of World War II and the approximate time our longest standing member, W.B. Bob Johnston, joined in 1948.
Grand Master Wayne Smith   Our first distinguished guest speaker was Washington's Grand Master, M.W.B. Wayne I. Smith. MWB Smith spoke to the Lodge and its guests about the importance of the Masonic Fraternity in modern times.
Lonnie Traylor Grand Lecturer   Our second distinguished guest speaker was R.W. Brother Lonnie Traylor, Grand Lecturer of Prince Hall Masons of Washington. RWB Traylor regaled us with several amusing stories and reminded us that we're all working toward the same goals and ideals.

A hearty and sincere THANK YOU to Yakima Compass Lodge #24 for their generous gift of eight gorgeous benches! They gifted four 10' and four 12' benches all of which fit our Lodge beautifully and look as if they were made for us. Thank you Brothers. Click on an image for a large picture.

In preparation for our 125th Anniversary we had decided that the lodge room walls needed a face lift. It had been quite some time. Because of the numerous wrinkles in previous layers of wallpaper we thought it best to remove them and give it a clean start. When we got started we discovered nine layers of wallpaper.

We started with the Northern wall of the Lodge. The process of removing the old wallpaper is easier than many of us thought (except for the height). Note the blue strip along the top edge. Details below.

This photo is a close-up of decorative wallpaper trim hidden under several layers. It must have been spectacular when it was new.

More of the old trim revealed.

Some flocked old trim found under a movie screen support.

It appears that the two West wall doors use to be taller and narrower.
It also turns out that the wallpaper was holding up part of the plaster.

Wallboard goes up.   Some wallboard comes down.

More plaster came loose than we planned and hoped.

Scraped, cleaned, patched and ready for paint.

First coat! Hurray!

Second coat! Hurray! Hurray!

Next, clean up! Hurray! No wait...

Next, drapery and pictures.

Under all the layers of wallpaper we found some graffiti, one piece has a date of "1904" on it. So, we're guessing that was the year of the first layer of wallpaper, or there about's. We, the "Ellensburg Masonic Lodge" didn't occupy the building for a number of years a hundred years ago, so we're pretty certain that none our past Lodge Brothers contributed to the art.

Nate was working on this section of wall and all of a sudden we heard "Hey guys! Check this out!"

We found this lovely lady a few weeks later on the South wall.

A number of pieces of graffiti are hard to see. This "Ellensburg Washington" has some style to the lettering.

An interesting character seeing light for the first time in 103 years.

Pat and Greg (pictured) take a break on the roof.

Considering there were nine layers of wallpaper, some with paint on them, there had to have been many wall improvement teams. The current Wall Crew is Brothers Nate Hill, Dog - Angus Hill, Pat Stanton, Tedd Hansen, Dogs - Grace and Mattie Waters-Hansen, Greg Maes, and Nick Henderson (taking the picture). We estimated 800 man hours to clean up the Lodge this go around. A special thank you to Bob Johnston for lending a generous helping hand. The Dogs, by the way, were real good help if we accidentally dropped or threw a tennis ball while we were working.

The Lodge wouldn't be standing, or at least in as good of shape if it wasn't for Bob Johnston, Bill Elkins, Al Taylor, Neil Leibly, Bob Crosier, and many others including numerous past generations of Ellensburg Masonic Lodge Brothers.
